In times of war or military conflict, the entire State of Israel mobilizes – but there is one group that is often left behind: people with disabilities.
In emergency situations such as war
Iron Sword War, or in the past in Operation Protective Edge The complex reality of tens of thousands of disabled people in Israel – people with physical, sensory, cognitive or mental disabilities – who are forced to deal not only with the security threat, but also with daily barriers that take on double force during a time of emergency, is becoming more acute.
🔹 Inaccessible shelters🔹 Warning systems that are not adapted for the hearing or vision impaired🔹 Emergency evacuation without wheelchair-accessible or medical equipment🔹 Lack of accessible real-time information
In a country where a body like National Insurance Institute, and civil society organizations such asAccessibility Israel Working tirelessly to promote rights and accessibility – the responsibility is shared: by the government, local authorities, businesses, and society as a whole.
While security systems focus on protecting the borders, we as a society must ensure that even those who have difficulty running to a protected space are not left exposed.
This is not just a question of welfare. It is a question of equality. This is not just an operational issue. It is a moral issue.
It is precisely in times of crisis that our social resilience is measured. The ability to see others, adapt solutions, invest in accessible infrastructure – and transform the concept of “emergency preparedness” into something that includes everyone.
📣 It's time to demand:
Mandatory accessibility standards for all public and private shelters
Multi-sensory warning systems
Up-to-date databases on special needs in local authorities
Emergency drills adapted for people with disabilities
Because a truly strong society leaves no one behind.
